India’s Northeastern Push Continues as Donyi Polo Airport Gains All‑Weather & Night‑Landing Status

Date:

The Donyi Polo Airport in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, has been officially granted an all‑weather license by the DGCA—clearing the way for night-time operations and round-the-year flights. As the first greenfield airport in Arunachal (inaugurated in November 2022), this development marks a key milestone in bolstering year-round connectivity to the region.

With a 2,300 m runway and a modern, energy-efficient terminal, the airport now meets enhanced safety and lighting requirements that support Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations, regardless of weather or daylight. Chief Minister Pema Khandu emphasized the significance of this upgrade: “a giant leap towards ensuring seamless air connectivity to the state”.

This all-weather tag aligns with India’s wider northeast infrastructure ambition, which includes over 50,000 km of road construction, multiple greenfield airports, national/back‑country highways, and tunnels such as the Sela Tunnel. Strengthening such infrastructure enhances regional security, economic activity, tourism, and connectivity to remote tribal communities.

The airport’s 24/7 operations improve logistics for cargo, medical emergencies, and defence, solidifying Arunachal’s integration with the rest of India. As its operational footprint grows, the Donyi Polo Airport symbolizes more than just connectivity—it embodies political will, inclusive development, and strategic preparedness.
