India Introduces Rs 1.5 Lakh Cashless Treatment for Road Accident Victims

Date:

The Indian government has launched the “Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2025,” effective from May 5, 2025. Under this initiative, any individual injured in a road accident involving a motor vehicle on any Indian road is entitled to cashless medical treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh. This coverage is valid for a maximum of seven days from the date of the accident and is applicable at designated hospitals across the country.

The scheme aims to provide immediate medical assistance during the critical “golden hour” following an accident, thereby reducing fatalities and severe injuries. The National Health Authority (NHA) will oversee the implementation, coordinating with state health agencies, police, and hospitals. Treatment at non-designated hospitals is limited to initial stabilization, with subsequent transfer to designated facilities for comprehensive care.

This nationwide rollout follows a successful pilot program initiated in March 2024. By eliminating upfront medical expenses, the government seeks to ensure timely and accessible emergency care for all road accident victims, regardless of their insurance status.
