The Indian government is set to launch Sagarmala 2.0, an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s maritime infrastructure, according to Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. The upgraded version of the Sagarmala project will focus on bridging critical infrastructure gaps and strengthening India’s maritime capabilities to boost economic growth and trade efficiency.
The Sagarmala 2.0 plan will involve new funding allocations for the development of port infrastructure, coastal connectivity, and the creation of new inland waterways, which will facilitate smoother, cost-effective transportation. This initiative is designed to further modernize India’s ports and integrate them into the global supply chain, reducing logistics costs and improving trade connectivity.
The government is committed to ensuring that the benefits of Sagarmala 2.0 extend to the hinterland by improving rail and road connectivity to major ports. This will significantly enhance the logistics ecosystem, making India more competitive globally.
Sonowal emphasized that Sagarmala 2.0 will not only strengthen the country’s maritime infrastructure but also create millions of jobs, promote economic development in coastal areas, and contribute to India’s goal of becoming a global maritime leader.
