Foundation Stone Laid for ₹471-Crore Underground Drainage Project in Madurai

Date:

Madurai, Tamil Nadu: Municipal Administration Minister K. N. Nehru laid the foundation stone for a ₹471-crore underground drainage (UGD) project in Madurai under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. The project aims to enhance sanitation and infrastructure in the city’s extended areas, including Madurai East, North, South, and Thiruparankundram.

Speaking at the event in Uthangudi, Minister Nehru also announced ₹190 crore for road repairs and construction. The funds will be released in two phases—₹130 crore initially, followed by ₹60 crore.

Additionally, Nehru highlighted that ₹3,200 crore has been allocated for drinking water projects in Madurai district. This includes ₹1,695 crore for the AMRUT Mullaperiyar scheme, benefiting the city, and ₹1,600 crore for suburban areas. The Mullaperiyar scheme is expected to provide water supply by March 2025.

The UGD project, addressing drainage challenges in areas merged into Madurai Corporation in 2011, will involve the installation of 500 km of pipelines, 20 lifting stations, nine pumping stations, and 79,227 household connections across 31 wards. Work will be divided into two zones—Vaigai North (16 wards) and Vaigai South (15 wards).

These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to improving Madurai’s urban infrastructure and living standards.
