Barcelona’s logistics landscape is set for a major upgrade as the Urban Master Plan (PDU) has officially approved the construction of the Port of Barcelona’s new south railway node. This strategic development is expected to significantly strengthen freight movement, intermodal efficiency, and warehouse connectivity across the region.
The project includes a new intermodal logistics terminal featuring a rolling-road facility and dedicated zones for reception, dispatch, and cargo handling. Developed across the old bed of the Llobregat River, the terminal will operate alongside the already progressing Terminal Nou Llobregat, together forming a high-capacity logistics hub.
With an estimated investment of €265 million, the infrastructure will support seamless rail-road integration and ease pressure on road networks. Once operational, the six-terminal complex is projected to shift approximately 640,000 containers and 46,000 semi-trailers from road to rail every year — a move set to reduce bottlenecks, enhance cargo turnaround time, and lower transportation costs for logistics operators.
The approval marks a decisive step toward modernizing Barcelona’s freight ecosystem, creating a sustainable, resilient, and highly efficient logistics corridor capable of meeting growing global trade demands.
