CM Stalin Dedicates Mullaperiyar Drinking Water Project to Madurai

Date:

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has officially dedicated the much-awaited Mullaperiyar drinking water project, marking a major milestone in improving urban water supply for Madurai. The ₹2,070.69-crore project, implemented under the AMRUT scheme, is now fully operational after months of successful trial runs and system testing.

The project will provide reliable drinking water to over 2.57 lakh households across Madurai city. Water is drawn from the Mullaperiyar Dam’s reservoir through a check-dam at Vairavanaar (Lower Camp). From there, it is pumped using four high-capacity 425 HP motors to an overhead tank and transported via a 94-km transmission line to Pannaipatti. After treatment, the water travels an additional 54 km before entering Madurai’s distribution network, which includes 38 newly constructed and 43 existing overhead tanks.

The massive infrastructure initiative was originally launched under the previous administration, but delays slowed execution. The current government expedited the remaining work to bring the long-pending scheme to completion.

Senior officials, including Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan, carried out extensive inspections ahead of the dedication ceremony to ensure operational readiness. With the project now live, Madurai is set to benefit from a more stable and efficient drinking water supply system.
