Chennai Metro Rail Phase-II Nears Milestone Completion

Date:

The Chennai Metro Rail’s ambitious Phase-II project is progressing at a remarkable pace, with nearly 70% of the station construction between Poonamallee and Porur already completed. This stretch forms part of Corridor 4, which connects Light House to Poonamallee and spans nine kilometers. Scheduled for a December launch, this section marks a significant milestone in the city’s metro expansion.

Spanning 118.9 km in total, Phase-II comprises three corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (Corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (Corridor 4), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (Corridor 5). The project is set to be launched in stages, transforming urban connectivity across Chennai. As per Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), 90% of viaduct work and 70% of station construction on the Poonamallee-Porur stretch have been completed.

Despite challenges at stations like Karayanchavadi and Kumananchavadi, efforts are underway to expedite pending tasks. Notably, Phase-II introduces significant design changes, including shorter station lengths of 140 meters compared to 230 meters in Phase-I. Additionally, stations will now feature two entry/exit points instead of the earlier four.

With these updates, the Chennai Metro Rail aims to offer a more efficient and commuter-friendly transit system, setting new benchmarks for urban infrastructure.
