Azhikkal Port Construction to Boost Kannur’s Growth: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Date:

Kannur: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the construction and development of Azhikkal Port, positioning it as a key driver of Kannur’s progress. Speaking at a district-level event marking the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government’s fourth anniversary, he emphasized that the port would be developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The Chief Minister revealed that administrative approval has been granted for constructing a Customs warehouse at the port. Additionally, he highlighted plans to improve road connectivity through the Centre’s Sagarmala project to support port-linked infrastructure.

“Azhikkal Port remains a government priority. Maintaining proper depth through dredging is crucial, and although the dredger was temporarily diverted to Muthalakuzhi, we will resume operations without delay,” Mr. Vijayan said.

He also noted that while an electronic data entry system is not yet operational at Azhikkal, customs functions can currently be handled through the Kozhikode system. Plans are underway to establish a dedicated facility at Azhikkal within this fiscal year.

The developments underline the state government’s push to strengthen maritime logistics, boost regional trade, and create construction-led economic momentum in northern Kerala.
