API Approval Puts U.P. Transport Services a WhatsApp Away

Date:

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has granted API access to the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department’s new WhatsApp chatbot, marking a major step in the state’s digital-first transport strategy. Available on 8005441222, the bot will let citizens pull up vehicle-registration records, driving-licence services, challan details, and application status around the clock—without a trip to the RTO.

By routing these high-volume queries to WhatsApp, officials expect shorter in-office queues, faster turnaround times, and lower compliance costs. Privacy safeguards mandated by MoRTH have been built into the integration, and the department says full public rollout will follow once final technical tests conclude. The initiative aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s broader push for “anywhere, anytime” e-governance and is likely to become a template for other states exploring conversational interfaces for essential services.
