A Smarter Rule for Indian Car Buyers

Date:

The Government of India has taken a meaningful step to improve transparency in the automobile sector. It has decided that car mileage will now be tested with the air-conditioner both switched on and off. Earlier, mileage figures were tested only without AC, which often did not match real driving conditions.

In a country like India, where weather is warm for most of the year, air-conditioners are used regularly. This new rule reflects how people actually drive their cars every day. By showing two mileage figures, buyers will be able to understand fuel usage more clearly before making a purchase.

The new system will come into effect from October 2026. It will apply to petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles. Car manufacturers will be required to publish both figures in official documents and vehicle information. This move encourages greater clarity and informed decision-making for customers.

This change strengthens trust between buyers and manufacturers. When consumers receive realistic information, it helps them plan expenses better and choose vehicles that suit their needs. It also supports responsible fuel use by highlighting how driving habits affect mileage.

This decision also pushes the industry towards better technology and efficiency. Manufacturers will be encouraged to improve cooling systems and overall performance without increasing fuel consumption.

Overall, the government’s move is timely and practical. It aligns policy with real-world driving conditions and places the buyer at the centre of the decision-making process. Such steps help create a more transparent, consumer-friendly and future-ready automobile market in India.
