Building Tomorrow: How Indian Cities Are Advancing Urban Planning

Date:

India is taking important steps toward sustainable urban growth, yet only a portion of its cities currently have formal master plans in place. According to recent findings, less than 40% of Indian cities have developed such blueprints, an area of opportunity as India progresses toward its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Encouragingly, nearly 90% of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have already adopted local disaster risk-reduction strategies, showcasing growing awareness and action on climate resilience and safety.

Master plans are essential tools that help cities guide land use, infrastructure development, public transport, drainage systems and green space allocation. As India’s urban population is set to overtake rural numbers by 2050, timely planning can ensure inclusive growth, enhanced quality of life and climate-smart infrastructure.

With the government’s increased focus on urban missions like AMRUT and Smart Cities, the momentum is right to scale master plan adoption nationwide. Strengthening urban planning frameworks today will empower cities to thrive tomorrow; socially, economically and environmentally.
