India’s first road trial using plastic geocells is a huge step forward for sustainable infrastructure. In this project, led by the Central Road Research Institute and Bharat Petroleum, recycled plastic is shaped into strong 3D units called geocells. These geocells are being used to strengthen roads in tough areas like Assam, Ladakh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and West Bengal.
From an editorial viewpoint, this project shows how creative thinking can turn waste into a useful resource. Every layer of this road helps keep plastic out of landfills and supports India’s mission for cleaner roads and smarter use of resources. The teams working on this trial are testing for road strength, lifespan and environmental effects. If it succeeds, this method can be used across India to build longer-lasting roads while keeping our countryside clean.
