Cabinet Approves ₹3,626 Crore Pune Metro Phase 2: 12.75 km Elevated Link with 13 New Stations

Date:

The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2 of Pune Metro, extending the existing Aqua Line (Vanaz–Ramwadi) via two elevated corridors covering 12.75 km with 13 new stations.

Key highlights:

  • Corridor 2A (Vanaz → Chandni Chowk) and Corridor 2B (Ramwadi → Wagholi/Vitthalwadi) will serve major suburbs including Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi—linking IT parks, educational zones, and critical residential pockets.

  • Budget: ₹3,626.24 crore, equally shared by the Centre, Maharashtra government, and development partners.

  • Timeline: Targeted completion within four years, with pre-construction activities like surveys and design already underway.

Strategic integration:
The new corridors will connect seamlessly with existing Purple Line (Line 1) and upcoming Line 3 at Civil Court interchange—enabling efficient east–west transit across Pune’s expanding metro network.

Ridership forecast:
Daily ridership on the extended Line 2 is projected to grow from ~96,000 in 2027 to 349,000 by 2057.

Impact:
By decongesting arterial routes like Paud and Nagar Road, providing multimodal access with intercity buses, and boosting connectivity to educational and IT hubs, Phase 2 is set to transform Pune’s urban mobility and support sustainable development.
