The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has constituted a powerful committee to create a national framework for safety standards, certification, and technical codes related to ropeway systems and components. This newly formed Empowered Committee for Ropeways Technical Evaluation, Certification and Safety (EC‑Rope‑TECS) will develop comprehensive protocols covering design, construction, commissioning, periodic inspections, certification procedures, and safety audits.
EC‑Rope‑TECS, chaired by the Director General (Road Development & Special Secretary), comprises 14 experts drawn from central and state governments, academia, and industry. Its establishment is a proactive response to the surge in ropeway installations across hilly and mountainous regions of India, employed for both tourism and public transportation.
Officials emphasize that a standardized, institutional safety framework will aid in curbing technical failures and accidents. It will enable better coordination between Union and state bodies, ensuring compliance with national technical requirements and conducting rigorous safety audits.
The initiative underscores India’s commitment to modernizing transport infrastructure while prioritizing public safety through certified, quality-assured ropeway operations.
