Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar will lay the foundation stone for the first phase of the Bengaluru Tunnel Road project, marking the launch of one of the city’s largest urban infrastructure developments. The project aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance connectivity across Bengaluru.
The first phase includes the construction of a 2.228-km six-lane underground tunnel connecting Hebbal Junction to the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) staff quarters. Estimated at Rs 1,139 crore, the tunnel will be built around 60 ft. below ground level. It forms a key part of the proposed Rs 17,000-crore tunnel corridor linking Hebbal to Silk Board, designed to provide faster and more efficient travel across the city.
The project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion between Mekhri Circle and Hebbal Junction while reducing travel time for commuters heading to Kempegowda International Airport. Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh stated that contractors have been instructed to complete the work within the stipulated timeline to avoid delays.
Construction has already commenced with soil testing activities near the UAS staff quarters and nearby locations. The government expects the project to play a crucial role in strengthening Bengaluru’s transport infrastructure and supporting the city’s growing mobility needs.
