The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a sharp rise in vehicle registrations, with the total number of vehicles crossing 27 lakh. This surge reflects improving connectivity, rising income levels and growing mobility needs across urban and rural areas. In the last financial year alone, over 1.6 lakh new vehicles were added, indicating steady expansion in the transport sector.
However, the rapid growth in vehicle numbers has also increased concerns about road safety, traffic congestion and compliance with transport regulations. In response, the government has intensified its road safety measures and strengthened enforcement mechanisms. Authorities are focusing on ensuring that vehicles on the roads are mechanically fit and that drivers possess valid licences.
To streamline services, processes related to learner’s licences, driving licences, renewals and fitness certificates have been made more efficient under the Public Services Guarantee framework. This move aims to improve accountability and reduce delays in transport-related services.
The administration has also invested in better infrastructure, including modern inspection and certification centres to ensure vehicles meet safety standards. Regular monitoring of transport operations and stricter enforcement of traffic rules are being carried out to reduce accidents and improve commuter safety.
With vehicle ownership continuing to rise, these proactive steps are crucial to maintaining safer roads while supporting the region’s growing transportation needs.
