Uttar Pradesh Launches AI-Powered Road Safety Project Approved by MoRTH

Date:

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved a groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based pilot project in Uttar Pradesh aimed at improving road safety. This marks a significant step toward integrating advanced data analytics and automation into India’s transport management system.

The initiative, implemented by ITI Limited in collaboration with global technology firm mLogica, will create a comprehensive data-driven model connecting accident records, road infrastructure details, vehicle information, driver profiles and weather data. Uttar Pradesh has allocated ₹10 crore in its 2025–26 budget to develop this AI-enabled system that enhances transparency, efficiency and accountability in transport operations.

In its initial six-week phase, the project will focus on identifying accident-prone zones, forecasting “black spots,” generating real-time dashboards and supporting proactive enforcement through predictive insights. It will also integrate with existing digital platforms like VAHAN and SARATHI to streamline licensing, e-challan management and compliance monitoring.

Officials highlight that the project involves zero direct cost to the central government while setting a scalable model for other states. Once fully operational, it will enable the Transport Department to transition toward faceless, digital governance — ensuring safer roads and smarter regulation.

This AI-powered initiative signals India’s shift from reactive traffic management to proactive accident prevention. For a country where thousands of lives are lost annually on the roads, Uttar Pradesh’s step could become a national benchmark in technology-driven road safety reform.
