The Maharashtra government has officially approved the detailed project report (DPR) and implementation plan for the ambitious ₹58,755-crore Uttan–Virar Sea Link, a major infrastructure push aimed at transforming connectivity between Mumbai’s western suburbs and the fast-growing Palghar region.
To be executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the 55.12 km corridor will include a 24.35 km sea link complemented by 30.77 km of connecting roads. The massive project will be developed in phases, with the first phase targeted for completion within 60 months.
As part of its financial commitment, the state government will allocate ₹2,619 crore for land acquisition and an additional ₹261 crore for rehabilitation and resettlement of affected communities. Officials said the corridor has been designed to seamlessly integrate with upcoming infrastructure, including the Mumbai–Vadhavan Expressway Connectivity project.
The Uttan–Virar Sea Link is expected to significantly ease travel, cut commute times, and boost economic activity along the northern belt. It will also play a key role in improving access to the proposed Vadhavan Port, one of India’s major upcoming maritime hubs.
“This project will revolutionize connectivity, benefiting both Mumbai’s suburbs and the growing Palghar region,” an official said, highlighting its long-term regional impact.
