Surat to Chennai in 17 Hours: New Rs 19,000 Crore Expressway Announced

Date:

India’s highway infrastructure is set for a major upgrade with the approval of a ₹19,142 crore expressway project that will significantly reduce travel time between Surat and Chennai. Once completed, the journey that currently takes over 30 hours by road will be reduced to just 17 hours, marking a major leap in long-distance connectivity between western and southern India.

A key component of this plan is a 374-kilometre, six-lane access-controlled greenfield highway passing through Maharashtra. Designed for high-speed travel, the expressway will allow vehicles to maintain average speeds of around 100 kmph, ensuring smoother, uninterrupted movement. The route will connect important regions such as Nashik, Ahmednagar and Akkalkot, creating a seamless corridor between major economic hubs.

Beyond saving time, the project is expected to deliver substantial economic benefits. Faster freight movement will reduce logistics costs, improve fuel efficiency and ease congestion on existing national highways. For businesses, this means quicker delivery cycles, while passengers can expect safer and more comfortable journeys.

The expressway will be developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, encouraging private investment while ensuring long-term infrastructure sustainability. During construction, the project will generate significant employment and stimulate local economies along the corridor.

Overall, this expressway reflects India’s push towards modern, high-capacity road infrastructure that supports economic growth, regional integration and efficient mobility across states.
