Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has emerged as the single largest steel supplier to the Zojila Tunnel construction project, which will become India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi‑directional tunnel upon completion in 2027.
To date, SAIL has delivered over 31,000 tonnes of TMT Re‑bars, structural beams, and plates for the under‑construction 30‑kilometre tunnel at an altitude of 11,578 feet. Linking Srinagar to Leh via Dras and Kargil, the tunnel promises all‑weather connectivity for civilian and military transport and forms a key section of the Srinagar‑Kargil‑Leh National Highway.
“Mega‑projects like the Zojila Tunnel consistently trust the reliability and strength of SAIL’s steel,” said a spokesperson, underscoring the company’s commitment to nation‑building and infrastructure growth. The supply schedule has ensured uninterrupted progress on site, highlighting SAIL’s production capacity.
SAIL’s role in the Zojila Tunnel construction project cements its legacy as India’s infrastructure partner. The company has previously supplied steel for landmark schemes such as the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra‑Worli Sea Link and the Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges. Construction work is expected to finish by mid‑2027, supporting accelerated regional development. SAIL continues to play a strategic role in advancing India’s ambitious infrastructure agenda.
