PWD Clears Construction of 5 New Foot Overbridges to Boost Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Flow in Delhi

Date:

The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has approved the construction of five new foot overbridges (FOBs) across high-risk, high-footfall stretches in the National Capital to improve pedestrian safety and reduce traffic conflict between vehicles and walkers.

According to officials, the new FOBs will come up at SPM Marg near Old Delhi Railway Station, Uttam Nagar East Terminal, Hanuman Mandir on Ring Road, TPM Church on the Mehrauli–Mahipalpur corridor, and near Kendriya Vidyalaya JNU at Vedant Deshika Marg. Tenders for construction have already been floated, signalling that work is set to begin once agencies are finalised.

A senior PWD official said the decision is aimed at providing safer road crossings in areas where large numbers of commuters, shoppers and schoolchildren are forced to navigate fast-moving traffic every day, especially in west Delhi’s crowded residential and market zones.

Delhi currently maintains around 115 FOBs. However, accessibility remains a concern: many older structures still do not have lifts or ramps for senior citizens, children, or people with limited mobility, as noted in a 2018 assessment. The new bridges are expected to include better access features and strengthen last-mile connectivity to Metro stations and bus hubs.
