The Punjab government has announced a major expansion of its public transport system with the addition of over 1,265 new buses to state-run fleets. The initiative, led by Finance and Transport Minister Harpal Singh Cheema under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, aims to enhance connectivity, improve passenger comfort and meet the growing demand for daily travel across the state.
Out of the total expansion, 659 buses will be inducted into the PEPSU Road Transport Corporation (PRTC), while 606 buses will be added to the PUNBUS fleet. A significant portion of these buses will be introduced under the Kilometre (KM) Scheme, which allows private operators to run buses under government-regulated standards, ensuring better efficiency while also creating employment opportunities.
The government is also moving ahead with procurement through tenders, including standard and midi buses for PRTC. Meanwhile, PUNBUS will receive a mix of regular and upgraded buses, including Volvo and HVAC-equipped vehicles, designed to offer a more comfortable and modern travel experience to passengers.
This large-scale fleet addition is expected to significantly boost service frequency, expand route coverage and modernize Punjab’s transport infrastructure. Officials have described it as a major step toward improving daily commuting while contributing to economic growth and job creation in the state.
