NPG Reviews Key Railway Projects to Boost Connectivity

Date:

The Centre’s Network Planning Group (NPG) recently convened to assess pivotal infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and resolving logistical bottlenecks under the PM GatiShakti framework.

One prominent project under review was the Wardha-Balharshah Fourth Railway Line, part of the Delhi-Chennai High-Density Corridor. Spanning 134.52 km, this project addresses over-utilisation of existing lines operating at 152% capacity. The new line will streamline freight movement for coal, steel, and cement industries, serving key industrial hubs like the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station, Ballarpur Paper Mills, and Western Coalfields’ coal production areas.

The Itarsi-Nagpur Quadrupling Line Project, a 297.05 km stretch, also garnered attention for its role in alleviating congestion on high-density routes. The line is crucial for industries around MIHAN (Nagpur’s Multi-Modal International Passenger and Cargo Hub Airport) and major power plants in Sarni and Koradi.

Additionally, the Gondia-Balharshah Doubling Railway Line, spanning approximately 240 km, was discussed. This project is set to support freight movement from iron ore mines in Kelzar and coalfields in Chandrapur, while easing congestion across multiple districts in Maharashtra.
