A new 46-metre-long and 7.5-metre-wide Bailey-type steel bridge is being constructed in north-east Kolkata to ease the heavy traffic congestion at the Ultadanga Flyover and along the busy VIP Road corridor. The project, funded by the state’s Urban Development Department and executed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), began on October 24, 2025.
Unlike the existing one-way Bailey bridge near Lake Town, this new structure will be a dual-direction bridge connecting Salt Lake’s AA Block via Dakshindari to VIP Road. Once completed, it will offer a direct and smoother route towards the EM Bypass, reducing the travel time for daily commuters.
Built at an estimated cost of ₹6 crore, the bridge is designed to handle heavy vehicles and improve overall connectivity in the rapidly growing Salt Lake–Sector V region. Authorities expect the project to be completed by the end of the year.
Officials have also proposed a new crossover on VIP Road from Salt Lake towards the airport, which is awaiting approval from the Kolkata Traffic Police. Once operational, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce bottlenecks at Ultadanga and provide a safer, faster alternative for motorists.
The project reflects Kolkata’s ongoing efforts to modernize its urban infrastructure and ensure smoother traffic movement across key junctions in the city.
