Montana DOT Shares Essential Tips for Safe Winter Driving

Date:

As winter conditions settle across Montana, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has begun early morning plowing operations, starting as early as 4 a.m. to ensure major highways remain open and safe for travel. With snow, ice and freezing temperatures becoming more frequent, MDT is urging residents to take winter road safety seriously.

Officials emphasize that preparation is the first line of defense. Drivers are encouraged to check their vehicles before heading out; ensuring headlights, taillights, mirrors, windows and wipers are clean and functioning properly. Clear visibility can make a significant difference when navigating snow-covered or icy routes.

MDT also recommends using real-time road condition tools such as travel apps or state road-reporting systems. These resources help drivers plan safer routes, avoid closures and stay updated on hazardous stretches of highway.

Another key piece of advice is to allow additional travel time. Winter roads require slower speeds, longer braking distances and heightened awareness. Rushing increases the risk of skidding, losing control, or being involved in collisions on slippery surfaces.

Experts further suggest keeping an emergency kit in the vehicle, including a blanket, flashlight, water, snacks, jumper cables and basic tools. With unpredictable winter storms, a small delay can quickly turn into hours of waiting for assistance.

As Montana heads deeper into the cold season, MDT reminds drivers that safe travel depends on both effective road maintenance and responsible driving habits. Being alert, prepared and patient can help ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.
