The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has unveiled plans for a 21-kilometre double-decker flyover construction project, set to be one of the longest in India. The ambitious infrastructure project will connect Shil Phata junction with Ranjnoli junction in Bhiwandi, passing through Kalyan — a major industrial and residential hub of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The proposed structure will feature a four-lane road on one level and metro rail tracks on the other, creating a seamless blend of road and rail connectivity. The project will also integrate with key ongoing initiatives, including the Virar–Alibaug multimodal corridor and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor. Once completed, the double-decker flyover will host three metro lines, drastically improving intercity transport and reducing congestion.
However, MMRDA officials anticipate major engineering challenges, especially while spanning over the busy railway tracks in Kalyan. Despite these complexities, the project is expected to revolutionize regional transport, decongest key routes, and strengthen the overall infrastructure network of the MMR, offering faster and more efficient connectivity across the region.
