LAKHIPUR — Addressing a long-standing demand for riverbank protection, Assam’s Water Resources Minister, Pijush Hazarika, has launched a landmark project in Lakhipur, Cachar. The initiative is a direct response to the persistent threat of erosion caused by the Barak River.
The Rs 400-crore scheme is specifically engineered to safeguard the vulnerable left bank of the Barak River. To ensure the durability of the riverbanks against strong currents, the project will employ modern technological solutions, including the use of geo bags and synthetic fabric. These advanced materials are designed to provide superior soil stabilization compared to traditional earthworks.
During the launch event, Minister Hazarika reiterated the state government’s commitment to flood mitigation, describing it as a “mission-mode” priority. He noted that this project is part of a larger success story, citing the completion of nearly 1,000 km of embankments across the state in the last four-and-a-half years. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the safety and stability of the Lakhipur region.
