IT Ministry Drafting Voluntary Code of Ethics for AI Companies in India

Date:

In a proactive move to address the ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is developing a voluntary code of ethics for AI companies operating in India. The initiative aims to foster responsible AI development and usage while ensuring alignment with India’s core values of inclusivity, transparency, and accountability.

The proposed code will serve as a guiding framework for companies to self-regulate their AI technologies and applications. It focuses on key principles such as data privacy, non-discrimination, fairness, and the prevention of misuse. This initiative comes at a time when AI is playing an increasingly integral role in sectors like healthcare, finance, and governance.

Speaking on the development, a senior official from the IT Ministry said, “This voluntary code of ethics is designed to encourage AI companies to adopt best practices and prioritize the welfare of users. It’s a step towards building a robust ecosystem for safe and innovative AI in India.”

The code will also promote collaboration between industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to create AI systems that benefit society while mitigating risks. This move underscores India’s commitment to leading the global discourse on ethical AI.
