India’s First Battery Swapping-cum-Charging Hub Launched in Sonipat

Date:

In a landmark step towards strengthening India’s electric mobility ecosystem, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the country’s first commercial battery swapping-cum-charging station at the Delhi International Cargo Terminal in Sonipat, Haryana.

Developed by Energy in Motion, the facility serves as a dual-purpose hub for fast charging and battery swapping, primarily designed for heavy goods vehicles. The initiative aims to reduce vehicle downtime and accelerate EV adoption in the commercial transport segment.

During the inauguration, Gadkari highlighted the importance of reducing India’s fuel import bill, which currently stands at around ₹25 lakh crore annually. He emphasized that shifting to electric and biofuel-based alternatives could help channel those savings into national development and economic growth.

The minister also outlined the government’s target to bring down logistics costs below 9% by December 2026 through integrated transport systems that combine road, rail and waterways. Union Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy, who was also present, expressed optimism that India’s heavy vehicle fleet will soon transition to cleaner energy solutions.

This milestone marks a significant push toward sustainable logistics and is expected to pave the way for similar battery-swapping hubs across India’s freight corridors.
