India to Prioritize Railways Over Roads in Economic Transformation

Date:

India is reportedly planning a strategic shift in its infrastructure development, focusing more on railways than road transport. According to sources, this pivot aligns with the government’s vision of building a more sustainable and efficient transportation network to support the country’s growing economic needs.

Railways, often referred to as the lifeline of India, offer significant advantages over road transport. With the capacity to move larger volumes of goods and passengers at lower costs and environmental impact, railways are poised to become a cornerstone of India’s infrastructure push. The government aims to expand the rail network, modernize existing lines, and invest in high-speed rail projects like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train.

This shift comes as part of India’s broader efforts to reduce logistics costs, which currently account for around 13-14% of GDP, significantly higher than global standards. By improving railway connectivity and efficiency, the government hopes to enhance supply chain dynamics and reduce dependency on road freight, which is more vulnerable to fuel price fluctuations and carbon emissions.

This rail-focused strategy is expected to not only boost economic growth but also align with India’s climate goals, making the transportation sector greener and more sustainable.
