Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced the government’s plan to construct 10,000 km of greenfield expressways across India. The massive infrastructure drive will be executed through 25 new corridors with an estimated investment of ₹6 lakh crore.
Speaking at the 120th Annual Session of PHDCCI, Gadkari emphasized that the new expressways will revolutionize India’s road network by improving regional connectivity, cutting travel times and supporting economic growth. The government also plans to monetize existing road assets, which could generate up to ₹15 lakh crore for reinvestment in upcoming projects.
Among the key projects, Gadkari highlighted the Zojila Tunnel, which is nearly 80% complete and will provide all-weather access to Ladakh, strengthening national security and tourism in the region. He also mentioned that India has successfully reduced logistics costs from 16% to 10%, with a target of bringing it down further to 9% by the end of the year.
The minister reiterated India’s goal of becoming the world’s top automobile manufacturing hub within five years. He stressed the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and encouraged clean energy adoption, including ethanol and biofuel initiatives that will boost farmer income and support sustainable growth.
This large-scale expressway initiative is expected to redefine India’s transport infrastructure and drive the country toward a greener, faster and more connected future.
