India Pledges USD 20 Billion to Upgrade Maritime Infrastructure

India has committed USD 20 billion toward maritime infrastructure development, prioritizing enhancements in multimodal logistics, port connectivity, and trade facilitation, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced at the Nor-Shipping conference in Oslo. This significant allocation aims to bolster India’s role in global shipping by improving the efficiency and capacity of its ports and associated transport networks.

Looking ahead, the minister stated that through policy incentives, ease of doing business, and infrastructure enhancement, India is laying the groundwork to emerge as one of the top five shipbuilding nations by 2047. Furthermore, to support a green and sustainable maritime future, India is establishing Green Hydrogen Hub Ports at Kandla, Tuticorin, and Paradip, and is leading the IMO’s Green Voyage 2050 initiative. Digital initiatives such as One Nation–One Port (ONOP), the National Logistics Portal (Marine), and MAITRI (Virtual Trade Corridor) are creating unified platforms to improve operational transparency, reduce transaction times, and build real-time data systems for EXIM trade.
