European Innovators Transform Textile Waste into Building Materials

Date:

Several pioneering European firms are turning discarded textiles into sustainable building products—a creative response to mounting environmental and infrastructure pressures.

Dutch startup Greenful has launched production in the Netherlands of durable construction panels made from recycled textile, plastic, and rubber waste, incorporating roughly 50% textile content. These panels are engineered to replace wood-based alternatives and offer proven performance across mold, fire, and water resistance criteria.

In Estonia, a €100 million industrial complex is underway to turn up to 70,000 tonnes of textile waste annually—domestic and imported—into construction materials. Slated to begin operations in late 2026, it will become the Nordic‑Baltic region’s largest facility of its kind.

In France, architect Clarisse Merlet and her FabBRICK studio have demonstrated bespoke bricks made by compressing textile leftovers into structural units. These prototypes highlight both technical viability and aesthetic flexibility.

Across Europe, textile recycling infrastructure is scaling up rapidly. The EU expects fiber‑to‑fiber recycling to reach 18–26% of gross textile waste by 2030, up from under 1% today—a shift requiring investments in collection, sorting, and new manufacturing pipelines.

These initiatives underscore a growing trend: turning fashion and household textile waste into functional construction materials, while diverting millions of tonnes from landfills and reducing the carbon footprint of building supply chains.
