Delhi Unveils ₹24,000 Crore Infrastructure Overhaul to Alleviate Traffic Congestion

Date:

In a significant move to address Delhi’s persistent traffic woes, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a comprehensive infrastructure plan worth ₹24,000 crore aimed at decongesting the national capital. The initiative encompasses the development of 128 kilometers of roads, including major arterial routes such as Rohtak Road (Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi), Ashram to Badarpur, and MG Road, which are set to be transformed into signal-free corridors with enhanced drainage systems and real-time monitoring infrastructure.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will spearhead these projects, consolidating responsibilities previously divided among multiple agencies, thereby streamlining execution and maintenance. This strategic shift aims to mitigate chronic issues like waterlogging and fragmented project implementation.

Key projects under this plan include a proposed 7-kilometer underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, an elevated corridor from INA to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, and new highways connecting Delhi to Katra, Amritsar, and Dehradun. Additionally, feasibility studies are underway for a tunnel linking Sarai Kale Khan to the airport.

This ₹24,000 crore initiative is part of a broader ₹1.25 lakh crore infrastructure push, with ₹64,000 crore worth of projects already completed and ₹35,000 crore currently underway. The comprehensive plan aims to enhance connectivity, reduce pollution, and transform Delhi into a modern, efficient metropolis.
