Delhi–Mumbai Expressway to Cut Logistics Costs, Says Gadkari

Date:

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently reviewed the progress of the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway along with key stretches of NH-53 and NH-48 in Gujarat, highlighting that the project is set to significantly reduce India’s overall logistics costs. During the inspection, Gadkari noted that the road quality is “excellent” and constructed using the latest engineering technologies, although minor issues are still being addressed.

The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, stretching approximately 1,350 km, is one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. Once fully completed, it is expected to cut travel time between the two major metros from nearly 24 hours to just about 12 hours. This massive reduction in travel time will not only improve connectivity but also bring substantial economic gains.

One of the major benefits, according to Gadkari, will be the reduction of logistics costs, which currently stand at about 16% in India, far higher than global benchmarks. The government is exploring the operation of electric buses and electric trucks along this expressway, which could further reduce freight and transport costs and make supply chains more efficient.

Improved road infrastructure, enhanced safety measures and better roadside amenities are also expected to boost tourism and support overall economic growth. Gadkari added that earlier challenges, such as land acquisition and environmental clearances, have now been resolved and the expressway is nearing completion.

The project marks a crucial step toward transforming India’s national highway network and improving the country’s competitiveness in logistics and trade.
