A new industry survey shows that a strong majority of contractors believe artificial intelligence (AI) will fundamentally change the construction sector, offering opportunities to improve productivity and decision-making across projects. According to the report AI for Contractors, compiled by Dodge Construction Network in partnership with software firm CMiC, 87% of respondents said AI is likely to have a meaningful impact on how construction businesses operate.
Many contractors expect AI tools to take over routine and time-consuming tasks, freeing up teams to focus on higher-value work. The survey found that 85% of contractors anticipate spending less time on repetitive administrative duties, while over 70% believe AI will help them make better, data-informed decisions that might not emerge from traditional analysis.
While adoption of AI technologies is still in early stages, more than half of firms are experimenting with pilot programs and preparing staff for AI-related roles. Some companies are setting dedicated budgets, creating implementation teams, or updating legacy workflows to support future AI deployments. Despite the optimism, contractors did note challenges ahead: data accuracy and security concerns were common, and many firms cited implementation costs and internal resistance as barriers to wider AI use.
Industry analysts say these findings suggest the construction sector may be nearing a tipping point, with technology increasingly integrated into project planning, management, and execution.
