Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the launch of India’s second hydrogen project in Golaghat district, marking a significant step in the state’s green energy journey. The project is being developed in Numaligarh and is expected to strengthen Assam’s role in India’s clean fuel transition.
Addressing the press in Numaligarh, CM Sarma said, “A significant industrial project is underway in Numaligarh; a hydrogen plant is being developed. While most vehicles currently operate on oil or ethanol, hydrogen is emerging as a viable clean fuel alternative.” He described the initiative as a “major milestone” and confirmed that tenders have already been finalised, with work progressing steadily.
In addition to the hydrogen plant, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is establishing a Dimethyl Ether (DME) plant in Namrup. DME, with a cetane number of 55–60, can be used as a clean diesel additive and alternative fuel, offering reduced emissions, negligible sulfur content, and lower nitrogen oxides.
The combined investment in both projects is estimated at ₹6,000–7,000 crore, reflecting Assam’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth and its ambition to become a key hub in India’s green energy revolution.
