AI‑Enabled Smart Traffic System Debuts on Dwarka Expressway

Date:

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched India’s first AI‑powered Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) along the 56.46 km Dwarka Expressway and adjacent NH‑48 stretch, marking a significant step toward reducing road fatalities. Operational since April and guided by the October 2023 NHAI policy, the initiative integrates high‑resolution PTZ cameras, radar units and AI‑driven sensors with live enforcement systems.

The network includes 110 PTZ cameras at 1 km intervals for 24/7 monitoring, and 15 Video Incident Detection & Enforcement Systems (VIDES) targeting accident‑prone zones to detect up to 14 violations such as speeding, helmet use, wrong‑lane driving and seat‑belt breaches.Six Vehicle Actuated Speed Display (VASD) boards further enhance driver awareness.

All violation data is sent in real time to the NIC e‑Challan portal, enabling local police to issue fines promptly. The system also improves incident response by linking control rooms to emergency services, fog alerts and wildlife crossings. Installed at a cost of ₹16–17 crore, this deployment sets a national precedent for data‑driven highway safety.
