Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a powerful tool to transform India’s road transport sector by improving safety and reducing pollution. At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways discussed how AI-driven technologies can address two major challenges, rising road accidents and increasing vehicular emissions.
One of the key innovations is vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems powered by AI. These systems enable real-time data exchange between vehicles, alerting drivers about potential hazards, sudden braking, or unsafe driving patterns. Such proactive warnings can significantly reduce collisions and save lives. AI-based monitoring systems can also enhance traffic law enforcement by automatically detecting violations, improving accuracy and reducing reliance on manual reporting.
In addition to safety, AI is playing an important role in monitoring and managing pollution. Intelligent systems can analyze traffic flow, track emission levels and identify high-pollution zones. This data allows authorities to take targeted action, optimize traffic management and encourage cleaner transport practices.
Collaborations with academic institutions like IIT Madras are further supporting research and pilot projects that test AI-driven road safety solutions. Integrating AI into driver education and awareness programs is also being considered to build safer driving habits from a young age.
As AI adoption grows, India’s road transport network could become smarter, safer and more environmentally sustainable, paving the way for a future with fewer accidents and cleaner air.
