Karnataka Tops India in Public Transport with 33,000+ Buses

Date:

Bengaluru and Karnataka have emerged as frontrunners in India’s public transport sector, boasting 7,067 city buses under the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and 26,054 state buses across the state. This makes Karnataka the leader in public-bus strength nationwide.

The BMTC has been steadily expanding its network, with over 1,500 electric buses now operating in the city, accounting for more than 20% of its total fleet. These green buses are helping reduce emissions, ease traffic congestion and promote sustainable urban mobility. Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) ensures connectivity across all districts, making the state’s bus system one of the most accessible in India.

This large fleet demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving last-mile connectivity and providing reliable transport to millions of daily commuters. However, challenges such as maintenance, cost efficiency and route optimization persist. Experts believe that integrating buses with metro systems, creating dedicated lanes and offering real-time tracking can further enhance efficiency and attract more riders.

If these improvements are implemented, Karnataka’s bus network could serve as a model for other Indian states, proving that large-scale, eco-friendly public transport can drive both sustainability and economic growth.
