Construction of New Cold Storage Facility Near Port of Savannah Underway

Date:

Builders and local officials on July 9, 2025, broke ground on a new cold storage facility near Brunswick, Georgia. The 216,000‑square‑foot facility will accommodate 30,000 pallet positions across temperature‑controlled environments ranging from –10 °F to +40 °F. Strategically located off Interstate 95 and within an hour’s drive of the Port of Savannah, it is designed to streamline cargo flows for protein exporters and importers by reducing transit times and handling costs.

Key design elements include 16 loading bays, 20 truck parking spaces, a 70‑foot‑deep dock for direct rail access, and 50‑foot internal clearances for high‑volume freight. It also features a 600,000‑pound‑per‑day blast‑freezing line with QFM rapid‑freeze technology, enabling products to freeze up to 80 percent faster than conventional systems.

Flavio Batista, Chief Commercial Officer at the Georgia Ports Authority, said the facility will bolster Savannah’s reputation as a gateway for frozen goods. The plant is due online in early 2026 and will support 50 local jobs. Services will include cold storage, inventory management, temperature monitoring, domestic transport coordination, and value‑added inspections. The project underscores investments in refrigerated infrastructure to support growing demand for frozen supply chains in the southeastern United States. Officials anticipate handling thousands of shipments monthly, cementing Savannah’s role in the national food supply network.
