First Electric Buses Arrive in Puducherry to Enhance Public Transport

Date:

The Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) received its first batch of five low-floor electric buses on May 26, 2025, supplied by Evey Trans Private Limited, a subsidiary of Olectra Greentech. These buses are slated for trial runs in the coming days and mark the beginning of the union territory’s shift toward sustainable public transport. Equipped with modern amenities and zero-emission drivetrains, the new fleet aims to improve rider comfort while reducing air pollution and operating costs for the PRTC.

Charging infrastructure is being set up at the main depot to ensure quick turnaround times and uninterrupted service. Officials indicated that these initial units will operate on high-demand routes connecting key residential and commercial hubs, with plans to gradually expand the electric fleet throughout the territory. The move aligns with broader state and national goals to electrify public transportation and curb greenhouse gas emissions. Local commuters can expect a quieter, greener ride as more electric buses join regular schedules over the next few months.
