Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has emphasised the need to develop modern, safe and sustainable road infrastructure to accelerate India’s economic growth and improve citizens’ quality of life.
Speaking at the 12th session of the India-Japan Joint Working Group on Roads and Road Transportation Sector in New Delhi on October 15, 2026, Gadkari highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the transportation sector.
The meeting focused on advanced construction technologies, tunnel and bridge engineering, sustainable infrastructure development, and the use of digital technologies in road management. Discussions also explored opportunities for collaboration in the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of road networks.
Representatives from Indian and Japanese technical institutions and industry shared their expertise, experiences and best practices through technical presentations and interactive discussions. The exchange aimed to identify innovative solutions to improve the quality, efficiency and management of road infrastructure.
The initiative aligns with India’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, which aims to transform the country into a developed nation by the centenary of its independence. Efficient road connectivity is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening logistics, facilitating trade, improving regional connectivity and expanding access to economic opportunities.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of adopting sustainable construction practices and modern technologies to develop future-ready transportation networks.
India-Japan cooperation in road infrastructure is expected to support knowledge sharing and encourage the adoption of innovative engineering and management practices, contributing to safer, more efficient and sustainable transport systems across India.
