Kerala Plans to Reopen Quarries to Tackle Construction Material Shortage

Date:

Kerala is exploring the reopening of quarries to tackle a growing shortage of construction materials that is pushing up building costs and disrupting infrastructure projects across the state.

Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan informed the state Assembly that the government was examining options to restart quarry operations without causing environmental damage. The move comes as reduced local production and restrictions on supplies from neighbouring Tamil Nadu have created significant supply challenges.

The impact on prices has been substantial. According to the Chief Minister, a load of crushed stone that previously cost around ₹2,500 is now priced between ₹6,000 and ₹9,000. Rising material costs have also increased the expense of building homes, with a modest 400-square-foot house that once cost approximately ₹5 lakh now costing more than ₹8 lakh.

The government is also working with Tamil Nadu to improve the movement of construction materials across state borders. Additional supplies are expected to provide some relief by the end of October 2026.

Industries Minister P. K. Kunhalikutty said efforts were underway to resolve regulatory hurdles and enable legally operating quarries to resume work after obtaining the required clearances.

The shortage has affected construction companies, contractors and infrastructure projects, highlighting the importance of a stable supply chain for essential building materials.

Alongside reopening suitable quarries, the state is considering alternative construction materials and recycling to reduce pressure on natural resources.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether these measures can ease price pressures and restore momentum to Kerala’s construction sector.
