Union Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar visited the Chennai Port Authority on January 27 to review port operations and inaugurate multiple infrastructure projects worth ₹54.27 crore, aimed at strengthening logistics efficiency and operational performance.
During the visit, Kumar inaugurated four key initiatives. One of the major highlights was the Andaman and Nicobar Passenger Terminal, developed at a cost of ₹29.8 crore. This project is designed to improve passenger handling capacity and support smoother coastal and island connectivity. He also unveiled an indigenous Vessel Traffic Monitoring System (VTMS) worth ₹22.58 crore, which will enhance vessel tracking, streamline maritime traffic, and improve overall safety within port limits.
Further strengthening port logistics and navigation, new navigational aids and channel buoys were commissioned at a cost of ₹0.39 crore, ensuring safer movement of vessels. Additionally, the foundation stone was laid for the renovation of Port Gate 2, a ₹1.5 crore project aimed at upgrading entry and exit infrastructure and easing cargo and passenger movement.
These projects are expected to significantly improve port logistics, support faster cargo handling, and enhance the overall operational efficiency of Chennai Port, reinforcing its role as a key maritime and logistics hub in India.
