Copper Cable Theft Hits BSNL Network in Chandigarh’s Sector 34

Date:

A copper cable theft targeting BSNL infrastructure has been reported in Chandigarh’s Sector 34, raising concerns over the security of critical telecom assets. The incident has resulted in disruption of landline and broadband services in parts of the area, affecting residents and businesses alike.

According to officials, unidentified individuals removed copper cables from underground and surface-level installations during late hours, exploiting gaps in surveillance. The theft was discovered after users reported service outages, prompting technical teams to inspect the network and confirm the damage.

BSNL personnel have initiated restoration work and lodged a complaint with local authorities. Temporary measures are being put in place to reroute services, though full restoration may take time due to the extent of the damage and the need to replace stolen material.

Telecom experts note that copper cable theft remains a recurring issue due to the material’s resale value, causing repeated service disruptions and financial losses for operators. Such incidents also pose risks to emergency communications and public services.

Authorities are reviewing security arrangements around telecom infrastructure and considering enhanced monitoring to prevent future thefts. The incident underscores the need for stronger protection of essential communication networks in urban areas.
