The Maharashtra government has handed over 118 acres of land in Malad-Malvani, Mumbai, for the rehabilitation of residents under the ambitious Dharavi Redevelopment Project. The land parcel, located in the Mukteshwar area, will be used to construct housing for residents who cannot be accommodated within Dharavi during the in-situ redevelopment process.
The project will be implemented by Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL), a special purpose vehicle formed for the Dharavi redevelopment. While the land ownership remains with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), the development rights have been granted to NMDPL. Out of the total 140 acres identified at Mukteshwar, 118 acres have now been officially transferred, while the remaining 22 acres are currently under legal proceedings.
The Malad site will mainly house residents who are ineligible for on-site rehabilitation in Dharavi, including those who settled after the eligibility cut-off date or are living in upper floors of existing structures. The larger redevelopment plan aims to transform Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest informal settlements, into a planned urban township with modern housing and infrastructure.
Officials estimate that the overall project could result in the construction of over one lakh new homes, benefiting lakhs of families. The land transfer marks a significant step forward in accelerating the long-awaited rehabilitation and redevelopment process.
