World Leaders Unite to Make Roads Safer

Date:

As a member of the International Transport Forum, India stands to benefit from the new global road-safety recommendations. These ideas can support India’s ongoing efforts to make highways, city roads and rural routes safer for all citizens.

Road safety received strong attention at the world’s leading transport meeting held recently in Leipzig, where transport ministers from 69 countries came together. This global gathering showed a shared understanding that protecting lives on the road must be a top priority for every nation.

Every year, the world loses nearly 1.2 million people in road crashes. It is especially heartbreaking that road accidents are the number one cause of death for young people aged 5 to 29. These numbers remind us why safety cannot be ignored. At the forum, leaders agreed on a new policy recommendation that encourages countries to adopt clear and practical road-safety plans. These plans will be based on evidence and tailored to each country’s needs, making them more effective and easier to implement.

Another positive step was the involvement of the private sector. Businesses play a big role in transport, from building vehicles to managing fleets and their support is important. A new road-safety framework for businesses was introduced to guide companies on how they can reduce crashes, protect workers and promote safe practices.

The forum sent a hopeful message: safer roads are possible when governments, companies and citizens work together. With strong commitment, better planning and shared responsibility, we can reduce road deaths and make travel safer for everyone.
