Uttan-Virar Sea Link Project Expansion Approved to Boost Mumbai Connectivity

Date:

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved the expansion of the Uttan-Virar Sea Link project to Vadhavan Port in Palghar district. The 55.12 km-long sea bridge aims to significantly enhance connectivity between Mumbai and its northern suburbs while easing traffic congestion.

The project includes vital link roads—Uttan (9.32 km), Vasai (2.5 km), and Virar (18.95 km)—to ensure smooth travel and better access to Mumbai’s coastal and industrial zones. This expansion aligns with the Maharashtra government’s larger infrastructure vision, which also covers the development of a multi-purpose corridor and ring roads to support major events like Nashik’s Kumbh Mela.

Chief Minister Fadnavis further reviewed metro projects in Pune, noting progress on multiple corridors. The 4.4 km elevated metro from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Nigdi is expected to be completed by January 2027, while the Swargate–Katraj underground metro is targeted for March 2029. Additional lines from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi are scheduled for completion by July 2029.

The CM also directed officials to expedite land acquisition for the Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla metro project, emphasizing rapid urban transit growth across Maharashtra.
