TRAI Chairperson Calls for Resilient AI Infrastructure and Strong Self-Regulation

Date:

The Chairperson of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has called for the development of resilient AI infrastructure alongside strong industry-led self-regulation to effectively manage the risks emerging from rapid artificial intelligence adoption. The remarks come as AI increasingly becomes embedded across telecom, digital services, governance, and critical infrastructure.

Addressing industry stakeholders, the TRAI Chairperson highlighted that AI systems must be built on secure, scalable, and reliable infrastructure to ensure continuity, data protection, and public trust. As AI applications expand in areas such as communications networks, consumer services, and decision-making systems, infrastructure resilience is becoming as important as innovation itself.

Equally important, the Chairperson stressed the role of self-regulation, urging technology companies to proactively adopt ethical standards, transparency norms, and accountability frameworks. Responsible design, regular audits, and risk assessment mechanisms were cited as essential to address concerns around bias, misuse, cybersecurity threats, and systemic failures.

Experts note that a balanced approach—combining innovation with safeguards—will be critical to sustaining AI-led growth. Over-regulation could stifle progress, while weak governance could expose users and systems to significant harm.

TRAI’s call reflects a broader policy direction focused on enabling AI advancement while ensuring safety, trust, and resilience. The emphasis on self-regulation and infrastructure robustness signals an evolving regulatory philosophy—one that seeks collaboration with industry to manage AI risks responsibly in a fast-changing digital landscape.
